The New Yorker has been publishing non-caption contest cartoons for nearly its 100 year history. The data set we were looking at was just from the caption contest ones. A lot of humor is about violating norms and to understand if something is a norm violation, presumably one would have to quote unquote understand thatSomething is a norm to begin with. People like computers are just bad at that.
