In 19 72, officials in moscow noticed signs of poor conditions in ukraine and other key farming regions in the us. The soviets started talking to washington about a grain deal. But crucially, they didn't reveal their whole hand. They kept quiet about that terrible crop forecast. Then once the deal became public, grain prices soared. American farmers were first to feel the effects.
