Antonya Nelson Reads Mavis Gallant

The New Yorker: Fiction

CHAPTER

Is Mavis Galant a Fading Author?

I think the short story in general is a hard sell for a lot of people. It's not that she doesn't know how it wraps things up, it's just a refusal to wrap things up. I appreciate it because it does the thing that short stories do best: make you inhabit a moment with a character and see the power of a small decision. In many instances, they're just a very brief period of time and presented in jewel-like fashion rather than string it together in a larger project like the novel.
