The Impact of the BBNJ on Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction
There's been an interest in deep sea mining for, I mean, really going back to the 19th century. The International Seabed Authority is the organization that the UN created to manage and regulate seabed mining. A big part of BBNJ is regulating marine genetic resources. And one study indicated that 98% of patents for marine genetic resources were held by 10 countries. One company, just one German company alone held 47% of those patents.
