The Importance of Copper and Blue Beads

The colonists ran out of copper and blue beads during the winter of 1608-09. This led to John Smith threatening to shoot Chief Palatans brother, Opie Konkanu. The English had a large supply of beads on hand, but their value had decreased so much that they were trading large bags full of blue beads for a few bushels of corn.
