The Importance of Self Confidence in Institutions

Imitation is the art of finding a fit between an institution and its occupant. MIT in the early 1970s, where I was a graduate student 20 years before you and I met was a pretty special institution. And there the kind of isolation that I felt at Harvard when I was a faculty member there 10 years after I entered MIT as a graduate student is inconceivable.
