The Importance of the Extended Family in Chinese Society
In Chinese society, historically, it's a little bit like Italy in the sense that you have centuries in which the government has never really to have been trusted. And China is particularly dependent as compared with Northern Europe and the U.S. on the extended family. So it's the social safety net since before the time of Confucius. It's also been the economic springboard during good times because you can borrow money or get help from your extended family.
