Standard Deviation and Variability
The standard deviation is designed to deal with variability in all data sets. In our example, imagine it's a little bit windy. The sand is going to form a much wider pile. But one standard deviation is going to still include just as much sand as it if it wasn't windy. So the same goes for two in three standard deviations. Because it's windy, sand has a better chance of falling farther away,. so the standard deviations are bigger.
