The work of formulating a strategy doesn't need to and rarely can be effectively done in a large group. There's a type one and type two area where you don't involve the front lines, the mass of people in the organization. The hangout is when you're not understanding what's happening in your own business. And so that's a trap you get into by making the board too distant from the technicalities of the business.
