The brain scan shows that participants during the hard task are more commonly fatigued. This provides evidence that cognitive fatigue might be associated with increased glutmate. Too much glutymate is probably a bad thing, just like galactic acid in muscels. But for now, sleep is pretty much the only way that scientists know that restores the brain to normal. It is kind of miraculous and poorly understood.
