When Hoffer coins this term in 1688, he is describing it as a pathology. In fact, in the 18th and even the 19th century, physicians looked for what they called the bone of nostalgia. So part of what's going on in nostalgia for me is this idea that it enables us to move away from the weight of freedom in the present and the pressures of the future.
