Kome was the son of Emperor Ninko's primary wife, Empress Takatsuka Yasuko. Like all members of the imperial family, outside of his brief childhood with his biological mother, Kome lived out his days in the gosho,. This was to protect the imperial presence from anything that might disturb his mind. In 1632, the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, had issued a regulation banning emperors from leaving the grounds of the Gosho. Ostensibly, this was all for their own good.
