The Human Potential Movement in the 1960s

The center of the human potential movement was at Essalut, a natural hot spring site on the California coast up in Big Sur. Buckminster Fuller, Ken Keesey, John Lilly, Fritz Pearl, and Alan Watts were among those attending retreats there. Joan Baez, George Harrison, and of course, Joni Mitchell would also attend as well. The idea is that the individual needs are organized in a hierarchy so the higher needs can only be satisfied once the lower ones have been checked off the list.
