Christmas, or the winter solstice season, in its various forms, has always been about an indulgence in excess. The original war on christmas was waged against the pagansque parties that marked this holiday in early america. In 16 59, boston actually made christmas illegal, doling out 50 shilling fines for any citizens caught celebrating,. even privately in their homes. Basically, white men and boys took to the streets in hordes, sloppy with drunken fervor, blowing loud horns, shooting off guns and fireworks into the cold white sky.
