This story begins on one of my very first days as a very first-year student at the Juilliard School Drum Division. I was 17 years old and I was running around from class to class wearing a black t-shirt and black tights all day long. We never saw that tape recorder again until our fourth year when she made some recordings of us doing some of our vocal exercises. She had recorded our most recent exercises on the opposite track from the poem that we had read four years before. It was this girl with a southern accent who sounded really childlike.
