There have been five times in our planet's history when much of the diversity of animals collapses. This is what we call mass extinctions. The most famous one happened 66 million years ago, wiped out the dinosaurs and lots of other less evocative creatures. In some ways, just to look at our own case, mammals existed alongside dinosaurs for about 180 million years.
