I think consciousness is not a subjective phenomenon. We have empirical evidence for conscious experience without a first-person perspective. So couldn't did in these cases be something that not a person has, but that an organism has? Even Thomas Nagel said that in an unknown paper called The Boundaries of Inner Space he says we may have to fall back onto the notion of an organism.
