Ep. 83 – John O’Donohue
Metta Hour with Sharon Salzberg
The Cost of the Crucified God in the Catholic Tradition
There's a big cost on this, you know? Anything I'd imagine. The Crucified God by Jurgen Maltman is the best book which brings Jesus together with the suffering and all the rest of it in the 20th century. In Catholic tradition there has always been a great tension between the mystical and the institutional because there's nothing as dangerous as the mystical. We live in a time of unprecedented spiritual hunger - people are starving for something spiritual. And the thing that disappoints me is consumerism is the new religion. The new God is the God of quantity and the liturgy is advertising and consumption. It should be given out generously and everyone included.
