Sleep is behaviorally defined as an inattentive state where we're less attentive to the world around us. It's reversible though, so we can definitely wake ourselves up unlike coma. We usually have a characteristic posture and it's homeostatically regulated. If we don't get enough of it, our brains will demand more of it to make up for the sleep that we've lost.
