The History of Whale Hunting in Nantucket
The history of men going out on open boats to hunt whales goes way back 4,000 years. A hunt was described by a European in 1605. Long Island and Nantucket were both established by the 1670s. In the 1750s, try works were installed on ships. These were brick oven furnaces used to render the oil from whale blubber.
