The idea that it should be up to you and shouldn't be up to the accidents of birth, is close to the core of what it means to be american. Americans are not so upset that there are rich people and poor people. What they are upset by is if coming from a rich family give a boost in your own future. Most americans mean 'you have a free chance to do as well as you personally can do'
