Is Psychiatry Going to Expand?

Is psychiatry going to expand its paradigms to seriously take into account social, cultural precursors? It's a really hard question to answer for a couple reasons. One viewpoint when I talk to psychiatrists sometimes and I say, you know, it seems to me that psychiatry has been since the 1970s has been really locked in this kind of dysfunction centered model. A lot of psychiatrists say, no, not at all. We recognize that some aspects of mental illness can be functional and purposeful and adaptive. That's perfectly consistent with modern psychiatry to see both function and dysfunction.
