Bertolt Brecht was a German theatre maker and did a lot of anti-capitalist work. He believed that the classic idea of sitting back and observing the characters on stage, bringing you to this emotional climax, but you're just observing the whole time. I think as long as you are recognizing your role as a spectator, but then also pushing yourself to be an actual actor... both can exist - it requires that extra step of actually going out and doing stuff.
