Panpsychism: Is Everything Conscious? - Dr Philip Goff, PhD

The Weekend University

CHAPTER

The Congruence of Panpsychism and the Materialist View of Human Experience

I tend to be more closer to the materialist in thinking, you know, my consciousness is just in my head. I think a panpsychist version of that view might fly. We are panpsychists and gives us, in a sense, a much deeper connection with the reality around us.

So just one more before
Speaker 1
we finish up, is there anybody in the room that wants to ask before I ask one from the livestream? One
Speaker 3
here, yep. Hello. I've been watching a lot of the cognitive science, John Vavakie,
Speaker 2
and he talks about how do you understand human experiences, and how do you understand how do you understand human experience is not, with the subjective and the objective, it's more transjective, so it's more mutually disclosing, so the environment and the individual is mutually disclosing, and I'm just trying to figure out if panpsychism is congruent with that argument, and if you had any thoughts on that,
Speaker 1
please. That's very interesting, yeah, I'm not super familiar with this, but I mean I know the general approach, so is it... I guess I tend to be, I tend to be myself more closer to the materialist in thinking, you know, my consciousness is just in my head, which is, I guess, what this view is, it's more kind of the interactions,
Speaker 2
but I suppose you could have either
Speaker 1
a materialist or a panpsychist version of this consciousness emerges from interactions view, and I would give the same arguments against the materialist version of that, as long as you, as long as ultimately your story of reality is physics, I don't think you can get consciousness out. Whether you think consciousness is in the head or whether it's in the interactions doesn't matter, whereas I think a panpsychist version of that view might fly, so in a way these are, I think, different questions that the debates I've been talking about are neutral on, but it's also a very interesting question. I think I'd be inclined myself, there could be other panpsychists who'd adopt the view talking about, and maybe I should look into it more. I think I'd be inclined to the more old school view that it's in the
Speaker 2
head, but
Speaker 1
it's not something I've looked into a lot, and it might be, what was the name of the person, sorry? John? Right, right, okay, I'll check it out. Thank
Speaker 2
you. We are
Speaker 4
panpsychists
Speaker 1
and gives us, in a sense, a much deeper connection with the reality around us.
