Jonathan Clemence is an expert on East Asia and author of the book A Brief History of the Samurai. The samurai have a very specific way of fighting their wars which is that if you lose, you're going to die. Japan has never signed the Geneva Convention. They are not party to international norms concerning the treatment of prisoners. When they take enemy combatants captive, the Japanese are utterly brutal.
