Is There a Puritanism in Alcohol Studies?

The literature on alcohol is almost entirely focused on the problem of alcoholism, studying it as a medical problem. There's very, very little psychological research on how healthy non alcoholic people use alcohol in their daily lives. The barrier to doing so has been this weird puritan discomfort with talking about the positive sides of alcohol and not just its cost. It's hard to get a human subject's approval for anything involving intoxicants.
