Pythagoras attacked the idea of the provincial deity. He led his followers away from these practices of sacrificing and making offerings to their regional or local or familial worship. Anaxemander conceived of the divine as the indefinite, the sort of formless beginning from which all things spring. Heraclitus criticized the religious festivals. And so like Socrates who would follow later, the Athenians had him put to death.
