Soel: We gather as a group that believes academic freedom is important and under threat. But we don't fully understand the problem or what to do about it, he says. The first keynote speaker was Jonathan Hite, a social psychologist from New York University's business school. He talked about the core purpose or telos of the university - truth, pursuit of truth; much of what we do only makes sense in light of this mission. Soel: American universities, drawn from British universities, created an extraordinary virtuous triangle. It's an institution set up to maximize a mindset, put young people into discover mode,.
