Medvedev was a lawyer by training, and others were like Putin, but unlike Putin. But for Putin this was clearly just simply a route to the KGB. In that role he became friends with Putin in the 1990s in St Petersburg. He would be brought in to run Putin's first presidential election campaign in 2000. And following that was his chief of staff, 2003 to 2005, and then made deputy prime minister.
