Early Modern Metaphysics

Early modern metaphysics is seemingly a lot more socially and politically engaged than what I think passes for most of metaphysics today. You have this fascinating conception of the unconscious being developed in Leibniz and Hume, of course, Spinoza was dead by this point. The word consciousness only really came into its familiar philosophical sense in sort of 1678 that Locke published his essay concerning human understanding. So in a very real sense, our modern concept of consciousness traces back to the discussion in which Leib niz and Hume were involved.
