The Origins of Religion in China

Chang Dao Ling was seen as an alternative sage figure to Confucius in the second century AD. He claimed a mandate to restore order, or quell demons, says historian Martin Onslow. China's religious tradition is based on the idea of empire, he adds. Even today, religions are viewed with suspicion because they're considered equivalent to empire.
