The idea of the third Rome became this whole messianic kind of fervor that would endure for literally centuries. Even when you look at other ideas of other nation that would call themselves Rome, there were so many more. Mussolini himself would feel every aspect of his reign in Italy with just images of Rome. The fall of Constantinople was going to have a massive impact on European trade and culture.
