The Mac was always planned to be an all-in-one computer, or as Jeff termed it, one big lump. Pits were the market segment Raskin was designing for. For a random person in the streets to accept a computer, it has to be easy to use. An Apple II could do your taxes, but you'd have to set the whole thing up first.
