You Don't Know Yourself Because You're Deep

We don't know ourselves because we are deep and because we are deceitful but take courage, there's some practices that can help with both of these things. The first one is what's called a prayer of examine or as we've been calling it a prayer of reflection. The second practice is fasting. If you've ever fasted, you realize it's a fast way, no pun intended, to learn a little bit about yourself. Watchfulness is actually an ancient practice in Jesus' Garden of Gethsemane where he tells his disciples: watch your innermost thoughts and images so they show up in your soul.
