The romans knew silk, not the brocade with which we usually associate chinese silk. Constantinople and chang an were two most economically vibrant and cosmopolitan cities in the world during the tong. It was a time of countless veling merchants who provided so much of the narrative that ultimately got written into many of the official and unofficial histories.
