Lewis and the Trial of the King of France
When it was all over, louis asked for a lawyer to help him prepare a defence. He intended to present himself as a wrongly accused constitutional monarch. The framework of his defence would be that he could not be held responsible for anything that had happened before he accepted the constitution in 17 91. In the end, he wound up defended by three lawyers, one of whom louis requested, the other two volunteered. No one, it seems, can reign innocently.
