Northern Hudson Bay around Churchill has annual ice, meaning every year during the summer months the ice completely melts away. This freeze and thaw cycle creates great habitat for seals and hunting polar bears. But further north, where temperatures are colder, the ice never fully melts. That's known as multi-year ice, this thicker ice is not ideal for seals and bears. Nick tells me, when he started his work 40 years ago, there were 1200 individuals in this western Hudson Bay population. Now there are only 600.
