The Tower of the Crown Jewels
Guy Fawkes, the man caught red-handed in an undercroft stacked with gunpowder, is the first to be tortured. King James himself authorizes the treatment. Charles II makes the tower the home of the British Crown Jewels in 1661. The jewels are kept under heavy guard, though for a fee the king allows visitors to view them from an observation room. Ten years after placing them on display, the heavy security faces its toughest challenge yet.
