We are always told to put our selphones into airplane modes so that they don't interfere with the airplane electronics. But blue tooth and wifi are perfectly acceptable on the plane. The cell network is built to do hand offs assuming that you are on the ground, but if you are flying above the towers, it's a very different set of math. If your phone is at the edge of a signal range, and you have it near a speaker, you can hear that chattering, chirping sound. That might not be what you want the next time you turn on airplane mode - bear that in mind.
