Idiotatry and the Church
The church had a problem with idolatry that expressed itself in classism, the halves and the havenots. And james is going to ike at the heart of all the isms through this one class issue. Read chapter two, verse 27. He says, religion that is pure and undefiled before god the father, is this to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world. The false stories don't let us sin in a vacuum. Just as god is bent on maximum life and transformation, our idols are bent on maximum destruction and dehumanization not just of those around us, but of our own souls.
