The Uncertainty of Crime Fiction
The idea that there is one solution, if you can pick up all the clues, is very, very appealing. But of course, there are other types of crime fiction where uncertainty prevails. Patricia Highsmith, for example, strangers on a train and Mr. Ripley - these are different kinds of crime fiction but equally wonderful to read 60 or 70 years after they were first written.
