Ted Budo's exploits are told by griots all over the west coast of Africa, Brazil and Haiti. In 1894 a small British outpost valiantly fought off a French incursion to burn down their foothold rather than surrender. The story is not written in the pages of books but repeated by griots across the world. One image remains clear and frightening - that of Omola as she rescued her lover from being burned through any number of burning buildings.
