In the nineties, academics were arguing that every literary work is as good as any other. It reached the absurd level where they would say that reading a restaurant menu is the equivalent of reading tolstoy or shakespeare. And i really felt like they were doing things that were interesting to themselves instead of what was appropriate for the students. There was also a lot of just rejecting books because of wo had written them. I think that we're finding out that it's down in college, and specifically among males.
