A stream is basically you're sending small chunks down the wire and you can grab small chunks At a time. The way that YouTube works is it's grabbing little miniature parts of an mp4 or whatever the file is And then as you're watching that little bit it's going to grab the next chunk too. So while you are watching the video it appears as if the entire thing is loaded But in the past we would have had to wait for the entire thing to load before being able to access it. A stream just like you have Experienced with YouTube is seriously just sending little chunks You could think of it as a literal river.
