Why World War I Was Not Inevitable
As a boy it was probably the first historical event that interested me. The thing that frustrated me when I began studying history seriously at Oxford was the insistence of a really large body of scholarship, particularly German historiography. And the more I read about the events that led up to the outbreak of war in August 1914, the more it struck me that there were contingencies. As you get deeper into historical research, as you pass from reading the textbook to the monograph, to the archival research, I think you become more aware of these contingencies.
