I suppose we think of Edison and people like Ford as innovators, perhaps more than inventors because they are the people who made cars affordable. I mean, Ford's great innovation was to bring down the price of cars, not to invent them. Wheels on suitcases is the story I tell to discuss the issue of whether innovations come later than they should have done. It must be possible for us to have invented certain things centuries before we did. But it's surprisingly difficult to think of good examples.
