Is There a Magical Fuel in Project Hail Mary?
The story was just crawling along. It wasn't moving nearly fast enough, and I was still in the first act at 70,000 words. And so some of the elements of Jack were things that I stole and put into Project Hail Mary. One of them was that Jack had this kind of magical fuel called Black Matter. If you shine light at it, it would mass convert that light into more Black Matter. So these are all elements that I ended up gluing together and they kind of came together nicely into Project HailMary.
