The degree of genetic differentiation between Indian Jathi groups living side by side in the same village is typically two or three times higher than the genetic differentiation between northern and southern Europeans. In India, there are many Indian groups, as well as the Indian group, which is a very large population. There are few Indian groups that are demographically very large. And this is not just true in a genetic sense, a large number of small populations. We have a history that is much larger.
