The Origins of Office Life

In 1868, an American inventor called Christopher Latham-Shulls patented a machine for typing on paper. The effect of this was to greatly increase the speed at which letters could be written and in so doing, greatly increase the number of letters being sent. By 1930, over half of American office workers were female reflecting the number of women who were employed tapping away on the typewriters.
