Most addiction memoirs talk to a kind of psychic, profound psychic distress. It often takes the form of self-loathing as one of the most prominent themes. Some people want to repress painful memories. And these drugs really help. They really do. In fact, I refer to them as oblivion. That's what replacement opioids do. But it's rarely enough.
